Barclays Premier League

As many of you know, I play soccer. I love playing it, but I also love watching it too. When I get the chance to watch soccer on TV, I don’t just watch any soccer match. I always prefer to watch a Barclays Premier League match.

The Barclays Premier League–or the English Premier League–is made up of 20 teams. This year the teams are, AFC Bournemouth, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Everton, Leicester City, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Norwich City, Southampton, Stoke City, Sunderland, Swansea City, Tottenham Hotspur, Watford, West Bromwich Albion, and West Ham United. There has been seven team that have been members of the league for every season since its inception. Those teams are Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

It is the most-watched football league in the world, broadcasting to a potential TV audience of 4.6 billion.

All 20 teams play each other twice. Each plays once at their home stadium and then at their opponent’s, for a total of 38 games. Teams will recieve three points for a win and one point for a draw (tie). For a loss there are no points awarded. The teams are ranked by points, then goal difference, then goals scored.

Each year, the bottom three teams in standings are relegated to the Football League Champoinship. The top two teams from the Championship, together with the winner of play-offs involving the third to sixth placed Championship clubs, are promoted in their place.

The Barclays Premier League’s competition and skill level is much greater than other leagues. The atmosphere the fans create is also amazing. Each club is different in so many ways with their own loving fan bases, traditions and stadiums. The stadiums in themselves tell thousands of stories of great moments and great players, intense nail-biters and crushing defeats.

So next time you have a chance to watch a match of the Barclays Premier League, you should go ahead and watch. You may say, “Soccer is so boring to watch,” but, you might also surprise yourself and enjoy it. -Stephen
