The Giver

I really don’t care who you are this is a good book to read if you are from the age of ten and up. This book centers around finding the hidden truth about whats going on in the country that you live in. and then you find out that your country has a lot of dirty secrets and only you know what is going on and you don’t want to involve any one else because you don’t want to get them hurt. But then you wind up getting the girl you have a crush on involved and she gets kidnapped and the best thing for you to do to protect her is to get yourself out of there so that they know she’s telling the truth when she says she doesn’t know where you are. You know average stuff right we’ve all been there before.

So why is this good well if the government bans a book from being able to read it in school it’s either one of two things its either the scarlet letter or it’s a good book to read. I mean why would the government ban a book if it wasn’t going to do anything to start an uprising against it. Unless this book actually could show people how corrupt the government that they thought was so great actually was. you know what let’s just move on how about we talk about what this book is such a good read. Well in my opinion this book is a good read because the amount of description is just right in this book it doesn’t just gloss over the description of buildings but it doesn’t go in to three pages of description to describe the building. And besides that it’s got a good storyline and this is one of the few good book to movie type of movies that i’ve seen. So I mean over all I would just recommend reading this book and if you get the chance read the whole series it doesn’t stop with just The Giver.

A Book I Recommend

Dear Jerry,

Today I’m going to write to you about a book that I read a few years back. The book series is called “Golden Filly” and the author’s name is  Lauraine Snelling. I got the series in two larger books, but its most common in the many small books that the story was written in. This book is about a college aged girl who trains young horses for the racetrack. Trish, the main character, loves her family, but she’s particullarly fond of her dad. When tragedy strikes the family, Trish is forced to fall on the Lord and rely on Him and not her dad. Through many trials, later in the series she becomes pretty successful in the horse racing industry.

I love this book series because it’s not your typical cheesy Christian novel, yet it’s not your typical worldly  novel either. By typical cheesy Christian novel I mean totally unrealistic, and that they have no issues and their life is perfect when they become a Christian. This book shows that you still have trials, maybe even more, when you’re a christian than not. Trish has her moments of unbelief and wants to give up, that why I loved this story line so much…it’s realistic and not too far fetched. It is mature enough for people my age and also an easy enough to read for kids in middle school. I was 13 when I first read these books and I read the whole series within a few days. This book was even beneficial for me because the lesson is to lean on God in everything. The book has drama, love, and humor. Typically I don’t like reading horse novels because they are either really off track or they are just predicted story lines. Lauraine Snelling writes the story to where you never want to stop reading, to where you NEED to know what happens in the next chapter.

If you’re into horse books, read this one!

Book Recommendation

Dear Jerry,
I have a book that I think you should read. The name of this book is called Percy Jackson and the Olympians the lightning thief by Rick Riordan. Percy Jackson is actually a whole series and I recommend them and think that they are great for middle schoolers and high schoolers. The lightning thief is about a boy named Percy Jackson who is the son of a god while he himself is half human and half god. In the book Percy finds out the he is half god and after he goes through some trouble has to go to a camp where demigods (half human half god) learn how to fight and stay alive. Zeus’s master bolt is stolen and Percy must find it. While monsters are out to kill him, Percy learns that all the Greek gods are actually real and that his dad is one of them. Percy has to find out which god is his father and stay alive against all odds and try to find the master bolt. This book is one of my favorite books of all time. I love this book because it is filled with lot of action and fighting. It has some very good examples of what true friendship looks like and what is to sacrifice everything for the people you love. There are lots of twists and turns in the book and it makes you want to keep reading. I think that in this book it has a lot of really good parts where it shows you that just because you think that you are small and weak you have the potential to become something far greater while defying what everyone thinks you are capable of. I recommend this book to anyone who likes Greek mythology and a good book where you don’t want to put it down until you finish it. So I hope you read this book Jerry but if you can’t find the time then take my word for it and recommend it to some middle schoolers.

The Ice Dragon

Dear Jerry,

Since we are blogging about books this week, let me tell you about the little bundle of amazing that is The Ice Dragon by George R.R. Martin.

Now, some readers are probably aware that George R.R. Martin is also the author of the Game of Thrones novel series. And, as one might expect, The Ice Dragon is actually set in the same universe as that series. However, it is entirely different. The Ice Dragon is a timeless tale for all ages, I assure you.

The story centers around a little girl named Adara, who lives in a land of ice and dragons. From the moment of her birth, Adara is labeled a winter child, because she was born during the worst blizzard that anyone in the land had ever seen. It was said that the cold had pierced her very soul the moment she was born into the world. As she grew a little older, it became apparent that Adara was no ordinary child. She is very quiet and introverted. She does not care for the things that normal children enjoy. The little girl finds happiness only in the bitter cold of winter.

One day, as Adara wanders about in the snow by herself, she stumbles across the legendary Ice Dragon. Most people in the land would have fled for their lives at the mere sight of this magnificent creature; for the Ice Dragon was one of the most feared dragons in the land. Yet, Adara did not run. Instead, she felt drawn to the creature. She felt as if they somehow shared a mutual bond. She was a child of winter, after all.

What happens next, Jerry, is something you will have to discover for yourself. I think you will find this story to be very captivating. When I first began reading this book, it didn’t take long for me to fall completely in love with it. I was so spellbound, that I could not stop reading until I finished the book. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. The whole story is a beautiful tale of fantasy and wonder; adventure and sacrifice. It is very memorable and had a lasting impact on me.
If I had to pick one thing that I loved the most about this book, it would definitely have to be, the illustrations. Much to my surprise, the majority of the small book is filled with elegant artwork, sometimes filling entire pages. The detail that the artist puts into every sketch is just fantastic. It perfectly reflects the theme of the story. Kudos to Luis Royo for his commendable artisanship.

So Jerry, if you’re looking for a short, easy-to-read story that’s filled with wonder and adventure (and dragons, of course), then you must read this book. The Ice Dragon, is a truly wonderful introduction to the genre of fantasy and I cannot recommend it enough.

Until next time, my little dragon friend.

My Brother Sam is Dead

Dear Jerry,

I have to tell you about a book. When I got told this, not a lot of books popped in my head. I didn’t know what to write about until I thought of a book that I had to read in school this year, the book is My Brother Sam is Dead.

Jerry, of course you can tell by the title of the book what happens. Don’t let that fool you, This book is a fantastic book. I would read it again in a heart beat. Sam in the book is the older brother of Tim, He comes back from college and tells his family that he wants to join the rebels. Well his family didn’t like that idea at all, especially his father. The same day Sam goes on and on about joining and telling Tim that’s he’s going to take their fathers gun that’s above the fire place. That night Sam and his father got in a big argument, The next morning he was gone.

That’s all I’m going to tell you for today Jerry, let me know what you think of the book. I’ll talk to you later.

The Hiding PLace

Dear Jerry,

This week I’m going to tell you about a book I’ve been reading. Its called The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom. It’s about a family of Christians in Hitler’s days. The family isn’t aloud to let everyone know that they are Christians, so they decide to find a hiding place where they can pray and do bible studies with other Christians. More and more Christians start coming to the hiding place to join them. Now I’ll try not to spoil the book to much for you Jerry but lets just say that they end up getting caught and are put in some bad situations. This is a really good book because it shows you that even when you’re alone and taken away from your family God is still with you and will protect you. I’m going to leave it at that Jerry so you can find out what happens for yourself.

Talk to you later,  Mia

P.S. this is a true story

Recommending a Book.

Dear Jerry,

This week Miss Sarah said that my blog topic has to be about recommending a book to a high schooler.

I have read many books so it’s hard to pick just one but I have decided a book to write about. It’s called “I Have Lived a Thousand Years” by Livia Bitton-Jackson. This book starts off in the town of Somorja in the summer, a girl named Elli who is only twelve years old and her older Brother, Bubi. Elli Lives with her parents at the time in Germany where Jews are being threatened. They are forced to wear a yellow star on their clothing at all times, at first Elli didn’t want to go out but her brother was wearing the yellow star with honor.  Soon, Ellie and her family and all Jews are forced to pack all they can in a couple minutes and walk to Auschwitz.

If you haven’t noticed yet Jerry this book takes place during the Holocaust. I’m only going to tell a little bit about the book so I don’t spoil it for anyone who wants to read it. In my opinion it’s a really great book. It opened my eyes and showed me how thankful I really am. I definitely recommend this book to any high schooler. The book does have some details of what they went through in the camps and how the soldiers made them suffer. This book is worth reading, at first I didn’t want to read it but I started to read and I love this book!

Well Jerry this is my blog for this week. I’ll talk with you in a couple of weeks.

~Stephanie.
